In the film, Rachel Weisz stars as Ronit, an Orthodox Jewish
woman who returns to her religious community after years of estrangement.
Ronit was shunned in her youth for her attraction to her friend Esti (Rachel
McAdams), but has come back in the wake of her father’s death.
Her return brings old feelings back to the surface for Esti, now married to Ronit’s cousin, and the two grapple with faith, loyalty, and mutual attraction.
Adapted from Naomi Alderman’s 2006 novel of the same name, Disobedience is Lelio’s first English-language film: The Argentinian-Chilean filmmaker last directed A Fantastic Woman, about a transgender woman suspected of killing her boyfriend.
