Tom Cruise hates stuntmen and because of this he has had near-life experiences.
Here are some stunts that Tom decided to do on his own and they took their toll.
1. Tom Cruise hit himself multiple times doing the cable scene. In Mission: Impossible, Tom hit his head several times in the cable scene,
as his weight was out of proportion.
After several blows, they
solved it by putting coins and metal objects in his shoes, so that it would
be perfectly balanced.
The funny thing is that Tom never
complained about the blows.
2. The scene that shattered her ankle
That's how he shattered his ankle when he jumped from one building to
another for Mission Impossible 6.
Tom decided to continue with
the scene and put up with the intense pain, because he didn't want to
reshoot and risk it happening again.
3. The parachute plunged him into the ocean
In this scene from Top Gun he nearly drowned, because his parachute
filled with water and the weight of it was sinking him into the ocean.
Fortunately,
the production managed to rescue him in time.
4. He crashed in a Nascar car
When you drive a race car, the co-driver usually gives you directions
based on a road map.
In Days of Thunder he wanted to drive his
own Nascar car, however he did not pay as much attention to the instructions
and ended up crashing his car.
He was unhurt, but the cameras
were smashed.
5. He Decided Not To Wear Doubles And Ended Up With A Twisted Ankle
In Mission Impossible Tom refused to use stuntmen for a scene
where he had to bust a water tank in his face.
The result of this
scene was that Tom fled after the explosion, ran over an extra and ended up
with a twisted ankle.
6. Tom checked out what happens when you don't wear a seatbelt during a crash.
In Collateral, Jamie Foxx crashed his cab into Tom Cruise's car.
Everything
was planned, but something went wrong and Cruise's car ended up flying from
the impact.
Cruise hit the ceiling and flipped to the point that
Jamie thought Cruise hadn't survived.
7. He fell off a motorcycle and almost hit his face
In “Oblivion” he was supposed to ride a motorcycle and jump off
a ramp.
He unfortunately lost control and upon landing he nearly
hit his face on the floor.
8. He was almost beheaded @d0 in "The Last Samurai"
Actor Hiroyuki Sanada confessed that he was about to slit Tom
Cruise's throat in The Last Samurai.
It was a real sword fight
scene and Tom refused to use stunt doubles.
9. He held on to a plane that was taking off
Tom Cruise is so brave that he strapped himself onto a plane
taking off for Mission: Impossible.
The actor wore protective
contact lenses and a harness for the scene and was still injured by small
stones speeding through the air.
10. He was hit against the wall in "The Mummy"
In The Mummy he didn't want to use a stunt double and endured
being slammed into the wall in one of the scenes.
Tom was stunned
for a few seconds.
11. He climbed a mountain with minimal safety
In Mission Impossible 2, Tom Cruise scaled a mountain with only a
thin harness holding him up.
Cameramen screamed nervously as he
laughed.
12. Tom is not afraid of heights
Tom Cruise actually climbed the Burj Khalifa in Mission Impossible and upon reaching the top he engraved the name of his ex-wife Katie Holmes.
The building is 828 meters high and Tom did not hesitate to jump into the void.
