A moment of maximum tension was experienced during the
94th Oscar Awards of the Academy of Arts and Sciences when actor Will Smith
unexpectedly took the stage to attack comedian Chris Rock when reacting to a
bad joke about his wife.
The events occurred halfway through the show at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, when Rock performed a monologue. Addressing the crowd, he made a mention of Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, saying, "Jada, I love you, [the movie G.I. Jane, 2: can't wait to see it, ok?").
The hostess of Red Table Talk (Facebook) reacted with a bitter face among the nervous giggles of the public, including those of the actor himself. After a few seconds Rock is heard saying, 'Uh-oh!' as Will Smith walks up on stage and walks over to him.
Without saying a word, the actor – who is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for the film King Richard – approaches and slaps him, which can be heard through Chris Rock's microphone.
Immediately afterwards, Will Smith returns to his seat. After a
brief commotion the audio of the transmission is interrupted but Will
Smith's lips can be read saying "Keep my wife's name out of your mouth!", in
addition to some high-sounding words inaudible by the censorship of the
broadcast.
"In this business you have to put up with people disrespecting
you, and you have to smile and pretend that everything is fine," he later
exclaimed through tears upon receiving the gold statuette for Best Actor for
the film King Richard, the biopic about the father of tennis champions Venus
and Serena Williams.
"I want to apologize to the Academy and my fellow nominees.
This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying about winning an award, this
is about throwing people at beautiful people...the cast and crew of King
Richard." Art imitates life, but love will make you do crazy things." After
his thanks, he ended by saying: "I hope the Academy invites me back." At all
times, Smith omitted Chris Rock's name and did not apologize. for what
happened.
Still shocked, Rock regained his composure and continued
without exclaiming, "This has been the…greatest night in television
history."
Pinkett Smith, 50, suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disease
that causes hair loss. In 2018 he revealed the condition and has since
spoken publicly and openly about it.
