Helena Bonham Carter trusts the innocence of Johnny Depp: "He's not stupid"
Johnny Depp is about to hear the verdict in his libel trial against The Sun tabloid. It will be on Monday, November 2 in the morning when we will know if Judge Nicol has found evidence that the actor mistreated his ex-wife, Amber Heard. If it ruled in favor of the actor, The Sun would have committed a crime by calling him "abusive" in the headline of a news story published in 2018.
Helena Bonham Carter has recently commented in an
interview with The Guardian that the whole case has been very surprising to
her, but she does not doubt her friend's innocence: "There is something
quite old school about Johnny, with those ways, none of this makes sense.
But the man isn't stupid. He wouldn't have gotten this far if he thought he
was wrong."
Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp have been friends for
years, and have worked on seven films together. Depp, in fact, is godfather
to her and Tim Burton's children. On her divorce from the director, she
explains, "It's taken a while to adjust, but I think we're doing really well
now. And the kids are doing well, they have a double life now. At first it's
a horrible thing to get used to, not having your kids around. The cruelty of
divorce is extraordinary. But then you get to a point where you're like,
'Oh! I've got this week off.' Parts of it are quite recommendable."
Not everything is black and white, not even with Weinstein
He speaks just as candidly of the pre-#MeToo culture in
Hollywood: "Who are we to say anything? For years people have chosen to
sleep with powerful people, and that's their privilege. After all, I took of
it two children", he says between laughs. On Harvey Weinstein, she is also
quite pragmatic: "I never see anything in black and white. I think people
are multicolored. They are almost never totally good or totally bad.
Weinstein was a bully, period and end. But also, not period and end
Actually. He was a bully, a would-be sociopath, and a fantastically
effective movie producer."
Helena Bonham Carter, who also takes advantage of this
interview to deny that there was a tunnel that connected the two houses in
which she and Burton lived when they were still married ("although it is
good that people believe it because it sounds much more interesting that
way") will premiere on November 15 the fourth season of 'The Crown' on
Netflix, in which she will play Princess Margaret again.
