News of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s move to North America may have rocked the royal family, but there’s one member who doesn’t necessarily argue with their decision: Sarah Ferguson. According to a source, the Duchess of York, 60, not only understands where the royal couple is coming from, but she even has their back.
“Fergie totally supports Harry and Meghan’s decision to move to
North America and can’t blame them for going!” an insider close to the Duke
and Duchess of Sussex, who announced they were officially stepping back as
senior members of Queen Elizabeth‘s royal family on January 8, exclusively
shares with Closer Weekly. “She always had a soft spot for Meghan.”
The source also clears up any rumors stating Fergie’s daughters,
Princess Beatrice, 31, and Princess Eugenie, 29, whom she shares with
ex-husband Prince Andrew, would be getting Harry, 35, and Meghan’s former
royal responsibilities.
“[Beatrice] and Eugenie have already
offered to help out with Harry’s duties — as a polite gesture, but the queen
isn’t planning to allocate all of them to the sisters,” the royal insider
explains to Closer. “Fergie’s concerned about Bea’s stress levels and is
trying to calm her down.”
“Beatrice has so much on her plate right now,” the source
continues, noting she’s “dealing with the scandal surrounding her dad,” as
well as her upcoming royal wedding to fiancée Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. “She
may put on a brave front but underneath it all, she’s feeling
overwhelmed.”
This isn’t the first time Sarah has spoken in
support of the Sussexes. Around late last year, Fergie quickly came to the
defense after Meghan, 38, and Harry — who got married in May 2018 and
welcomed son Archie Harrison, 8 months, in May 2019 — detailed the struggles
of living in the public eye in the fall 2019 documentary titled Harry &
Meghan: An African Journey.
“I know what Meghan is going through,” Fergie candidly
confessed to Vogue Arabia in December 2019. “It must be hard for Meghan, and
I can relate to her.”
The duchess, who tied the knot with the Duke of York, 59, in 1986,
but sadly divorced 10 years later in 1996, told the outlet she and the
former Suits actress are more alike than everyone might think.
“I have been in Meghan’s shoes, and I still am,” Fergie
insisted. “There’s always a twist of negativity and it just gets so sad and
tiring; it’s hard and mean. I abhor bullying and I feel desperately sorry
for the pain they must be going through because I’ve been through it.”
