In Defense of Meghan Markle's 'Ill-Fitting' Wedding Attire

Katy Perry's opinion on the dress's fit might have raised eyebrows, but did it truly warrant another fitting? - by Mahalia Chang

Adorned with an arced bandeau tiara, a pristine Givenchy gown, and an impressive 16-foot cathedral veil, Meghan Markle etched her name into the annals of royal wedding dress history, joining the likes of Grace Kelly and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.

Notwithstanding the grandeur and elegance of her attire, some remained unimpressed.

It wasn't solely the unadorned design (lacking lace and pearls that are often expected), or the snugness of the bodice and sleeves, or even Meghan's bridal appearance that left certain critics, including Katy Perry, somewhat unenthusiastic.

"I would have considered another fitting," remarked Katy Perry regarding the dress. "Honesty is my policy! One more fitting, but I adore you."

Nonetheless, there remains a voice of admiration for all things Meghan Markle.

Regarding the Fit:

As Meghan alighted from the car at St. George's Chapel, her Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy gown was momentarily concealed by her tulle veil. But when the veil was gently lifted, by none other than Prince Harry himself, revealing one of the most iconic moments of the day, spectators were given a full view of the gown.

A bateau neckline, three-quarter sleeves, a six-seamed silhouette, and a nipped waist, all meticulously crafted from "exclusive double-bonded silk cady" with a "soft matte lustre."

Both this fabric and the "triple silk organza" used for the underskirt possess remarkable thickness and stiffness, providing little room for stretch.

If one were to venture a guess, it would be reasonable to assume that Keller and Markle consciously chose a more accommodating fit around the bodice and sleeves to allow the bride more ease of movement and comfort in the dress.

A skin-tight fit, as some have suggested, could have potentially hindered Meghan's ability to sit (whether in the car or during the service) or to move her arms freely due to the constriction caused by the dense material.

Considering Meghan's desire to convey a modern and relaxed aesthetic, it's possible that both designer and bride agreed on a slightly more generous fit, ensuring a sense of ease and grace, rather than excessive tightness.
