Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who has been making waves with her
potential foray into U.S. politics, has encountered her first major setback.
In an unexpected move, California Governor Gavin Newsom has chosen not to
appoint Meghan Markle as California's new United States Senator, despite her
high-profile interest in the political arena.
Following the unfortunate news of the passing of California Senator Diane
Feinstein at the age of 90, the spotlight immediately turned to Governor Gavin
Newsom, who was tasked with filling the vacant seat.
Although Gavin Newsom reportedly engaged in a Zoom call with the Duchess of
Sussex, he ultimately selected Laphonza Butler as the new United States
Senator for California.
Meghan, who has been vocal about her passion for politics, was not chosen for
the position. In his announcement, Governor Newsom declared, "I'm proud to
announce California's new United States Senator—Laphonza Butler."
Sky News host Caroline Di Russo commented on the decision, saying, "Meghan has
always been associated with politics, displaying a keen interest in the field.
However, despite Governor Newsom's desire to appoint a Black woman, he has
opted for Laphonza Butler."
"It's indeed disappointing that Meghan didn't secure the position," added Di
Russo.
The opportunity for Meghan to replace the late California Senator Diane
Feinstein arose following her recent passing. Oprah Winfrey's name was also
floated as a potential candidate, but Meghan did not ultimately fill the
vacant seat. An Oprah source even confirmed that she "is not considering the
seat should it become available," as reported by the LA Times.
