After the highly publicized and tumultuous divorce of King Charles and
Princess Diana in 1992, their post-divorce relationship reportedly took a
surprising turn as they arrived at an 'understanding,' despite their public
fallout.
According to royal expert Marlene Koenig, speaking to the Daily Express, the
late Princess of Wales believed that the monarch harbored deep feelings for
her, as evidenced by his love letters from her. However, Diana acknowledged
that Queen Camilla was the only woman King Charles truly accepted.
"I think they came to an understanding," Koenig shared. "I think she was aware that Camilla was the one and she wasn't."
On the day of the Decree Nisi, before the Absolute, they met, talked, and sat down. Diana expressed to a reporter her wish to make their love letters public because she believed Charles genuinely loved her at the beginning.
"It was never meant to be. It was an arranged marriage. But they hadn't had time to get to know each other, court each other," Koenig explained.
Reflecting on their past, the royal expert added, "They learned a lot from that mistake."
