Recent turmoil, sparked by their rumored friend's Endgame, has led to discussions about stripping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their royal titles under this potential new law, reigniting concerns about racial tensions.
If a groundbreaking law is passed, it could compel the House of Commons to consider referring to the US-based couple with the more common 'Mr and Mrs' titles.
British politician Bob Seely, a monarchy supporter, is advocating for the adaptation of laws from the First World War, originally designed to deny British titles to German nobles.
This proposed measure, deemed a 'nuclear option,' seeks to respect the decisions of those who no longer wish to be part of the monarchy by removing "titles and privileges" associated with the institution.
"The Duke and Duchess could adopt the titles 'Mr and Mrs,' much like the rest of us," asserts U.K lawmaker Bob Seely. He adds, "My Titles Deprivation 1917 Act Amendment Bill would enable a parliamentary vote to advise the ancient advisory Privy Council to strip a member of the royal family of their titles."
Summing up his objective, the conservative MP emphasizes, "If someone chooses to step away from royalty, we respect that decision. However, retaining titles and privileges becomes questionable when they undermine an institution integral to our nation's identity."
