The royal departure of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and
Meghan Markle, has been viewed as a significant loss for the Palace. BBC’s royal
and diplomatic correspondent Nicholas Witchell expressed the sentiment that with
a different approach, the royal family might have prevented their exit.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Witchell noted, “It’s a huge loss to
the royal family, when you think what they might have done had they been
prepared to try harder and give it more time.” He suggested that Meghan’s
impatience and a perception of well-meaning individuals being against her
could have played a role in the situation.
Witchell expressed sadness over the breakdown in the relationship between Harry and his brother William. Additionally, he conveyed sympathy for Harry after reading about his mental health struggles in the book "Spare."
Regarding Harry's legal battles against news groups, Witchell seemed cautious, stating, “I think they’ve [Harry and Meghan] been overly sensitive. They are public figures; they make use of the media. So, they should be more prepared to take the knocks with the positive moments.”
The reflections highlight the complexities surrounding the royal exit and the potential impact of differing approaches on the course of events.
