Prince Harry Bestows Unexpected Nickname on Matt Smith Post-Prince Philip Role in The Crown

Matt Smith, acclaimed for his portrayal of Prince Philip in The Crown, recently disclosed that Prince Harry bestowed upon him an unexpected nickname following his iconic role.

Smith, who portrayed the late Duke of Edinburgh in the initial two seasons of the widely acclaimed Netflix series, shared a chance encounter with Prince Harry at a polo match in 2017.

Recalling the moment, Smith revealed to the BBC, "He was like 'Alright grandad?' I was like 'Alright mate?'" The exchange left Smith pleasantly surprised by the casual greeting.

The actor also hinted at Prince Harry's interest in The Crown, stating, "I can’t claim to know if he watches [The Crown] currently, but he watched a bit of it then."

Smith further mentioned that even Queen Elizabeth herself reportedly watched the series, using a projector on Sunday nights for viewing.

However, Smith revealed that Prince Philip did not particularly enjoy The Crown, offering insights into the royal family's viewing habits.

Smith's remarkable portrayal earned him an Emmy nomination for his role as Prince Philip.

Reflecting on another royal encounter, Smith shared a delightful interaction with King Charles, complimenting the monarch on his enduringly stylish footwear.

"I told him that I thought he had fabulous shoes, which he told me he’d had for 30 years. They were red, they were like red brogues. They were beautiful," Smith recounted, adding a charming anecdote to his royal experiences.
