Royal historian Marlene Koenig has drawn attention to the issue, stating that Prince Harry's position as a Counsellor of State is in question due to residency requirements. Koenig pointed out that a Counsellor of State must be domiciled in the UK, which Prince Harry ceased to be after losing his lease to Frogmore Cottage.
During his recent 25-hour trip to the UK, Prince Harry opted to stay in a London hotel rather than at Frogmore Cottage. This decision has raised concerns about his ability to fulfill the duties associated with his royal role.
Grant Harrold, King Charles's former butler, suggested that Prince Harry's choice of accommodation was a deliberate attempt to demonstrate financial independence and capability.
Koenig emphasized that only working royals are typically appointed as Counsellors of State, as highlighted by recent legislation proposed by King Charles to include Princess Anne and Prince Edward in the role.
As per legal requirements, the Counsellors of State include the monarch's spouse and the next four individuals in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. Currently, these individuals are Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice. King Charles had also proposed naming Princess Anne and Prince Edward as additional Counsellors of State in late 2022.
