Following a paparazzi car chase incident in 2023 during their visit to New York City, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are set to receive increased security measures.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) concluded, in a letter issued in September 2023, that the paparazzi pursued Harry and Meghan in a "reckless" manner. Although the couple opted not to press charges, they will be provided with enhanced security during their future visits to the Big Apple, according to NBC New York.
This development follows a report by The Daily Beast in December 2023, where the NYPD stated that the car chase "could prompt arrests." The NYPD's intelligence conveyed to the Metropolitan Police in London cited "reckless disregard of vehicle and traffic laws" and "persistently dangerous and unacceptable behavior" by the paparazzi during the incident.
The conclusion reached, after consultation with the Manhattan District Attorney's office, was that there is sufficient evidence to arrest two individuals for reckless endangerment.
In May 2023, Harry, 38, and Meghan, 42, along with Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, visited New York City for the 2023 Women of Vision Awards, where Meghan was honored. Upon leaving the event, the trio was pursued by numerous photographers, who chased the taxi hired by the group to return to their hotel.
