King Charles Sparks Controversy with Change to 200-Year-Old Tradition

King Charles has introduced a significant shift in royal customs, unsettling many Windsor residents.

For nearly two centuries, since 1825, locals enjoyed free access to Windsor Castle’s historic sites. This tradition will end on June 1st, 2024, with a new admission fee, according to the BBC.

The Royal Collection Trust will offer a discounted rate, slashing regular admission prices by 50% for residents with a Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Advantage Card, which provides perks at over 200 locations.

Windsor Castle, a private royal residence, remains accessible to visitors year-round.

Residents can apply online for the free Advantage Card.

The policy change has sparked criticism, notably from parliamentary candidate Julian Tisi. He expressed that locals, who warmly welcome tourists to their shops and restaurants and help with directions, deserve the courtesy of free visits in return.

A Royal Collection Trust spokesperson told Hello! that the pricing update aligns with practices of other local businesses.
