Meghan Markle has faced criticism for allegedly sidelining the plight of female victims in Nigeria, raising questions about her self-proclaimed feminist values.
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told GB News that Meghan’s choice of Nigeria for her visit with Prince Harry is “interesting” given the country’s record of human rights violations. Schofield highlighted concerns from the US Department of Justice about issues such as child brides, child labor, and female genital mutilation in Nigeria.
The Duchess of Sussex, who revealed on her Archetypes podcast that she is 43 percent Nigerian, referenced her heritage during her three-day visit to the African country. However, Schofield argued that Meghan’s actions were inconsistent with her feminist stance.
“How can a feminist sit on a stage and say that she’s ‘excited to be in my country’ without speaking out for some of those victims?” Schofield questioned. She criticized Meghan and Harry for presenting a cheerful facade while serious human rights violations occur daily.
“There are real-life human rights violations happening every day, and it seems odd that [Prince Harry and Meghan] would come here and do these Disneyland shows with all these smiles and act like everything is fine and normal,” Schofield added.
This criticism has sparked a broader debate on the responsibilities of public figures when visiting countries with significant human rights challenges.
