The Duke of Sussex returned to the United Kingdom this week to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. However, upon his arrival in London, it was revealed that King Charles would not be available to meet with his son, contrary to earlier speculations.
Shortly thereafter, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles would bestow a military honour upon Prince William, a recognition previously presumed to be destined for Prince Harry.
Prince William has been appointed as the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corp, the regiment with which Prince Harry served during his deployment in Afghanistan.
Royal expert and author Tom Quinn shared with The Mirror: "King Charles’ decision to remove Prince Harry from his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps is deeply painful for the prince, who has often felt sidelined and undervalued.
"What exacerbates the situation is that the role is being transferred to Prince Harry's brother, whom he holds responsible for many of his struggles. Moreover, the timing of the announcement, during Harry's brief visit to the UK, appears calculated to have maximum impact – it sends a clear message to Harry that he is no longer welcome."
Mr. Quinn revealed that the senior royals anticipated the emotional impact on Harry, stating that "he is reported to have been in tears upon learning the news." He continued, "However, they have decided to take a firm stance, emphasizing that betraying the family comes with consequences beyond relinquishing royal duties. It also entails losing cherished roles."
"Prince Harry took great pride in his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps," Mr. Quinn continued. "The haste with which the transition is being carried out suggests a desire to swiftly distance themselves from Harry – his role will be transferred to William in just a few days’ time, on 13 May."
