Sarah continues to reside with Andrew at Royal Lodge in Windsor when she's in the UK, a living arrangement that highlights their unique connection. However, King Charles has reportedly urged Andrew to vacate the 30-room mansion for the more modest Frogmore Cottage, formerly occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Their love story began with a grand wedding at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986. Yet, Andrew's naval career, which often kept him away, led to their separation in 1991 and eventual divorce in 1996. Reflecting on their marriage in a 2010 interview with US TV host Ernie Manouse, Sarah remarked, “I married my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer. But I ended up with a palace, not him, seeing him only 40 days a year."
Despite the dissolution of their marriage, Sarah has remained a steadfast supporter of Andrew, especially during his recent controversies. She continues to speak highly of him, describing him as a "great man" and cherishing their wedding day as "the best day of [her] life."
In her piece for the Sunday Times, Sarah explained why she still stays at Royal Lodge, stating, "When I'm in the UK, I'm lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous."
Their bond is evident in their frequent joint vacations, including a 2019 trip to Bahrain with Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Sarah often praises Andrew publicly, and there are frequent rumors about them rekindling their relationship. In 2010, Sarah even suggested that, given another chance, they would defy those who came between them.
In a 2017 interview, Sarah hinted at their enduring closeness, saying they "never really left each other." She has expressed that the love she felt for Andrew then persists, calling him "the best and greatest gentleman" she knows. Their relationship, she explains, is an extraordinary friendship rather than a traditional marriage.
Sarah also told the Daily Mail in 2018 that their family remains "united" despite all they have faced, asserting she is "divorced to" Andrew, not from him. "We're the happiest divorced couple in the world," she said.
When asked about the future of Royal Lodge on Good Morning Britain, Sarah diplomatically responded, "I tend not to get involved in brothers' discussions and I think that's the safest place to be."
