Prince William recently opened up about a memorable birthday gift blunder that didn't quite hit the mark with Kate Middleton, admitting he now has "no idea" why he chose it. Despite his history of gifting stunning jewelry, such as Cartier hooped earrings for Kate's 30th birthday and green amethyst, tourmaline, and diamond earrings for the birth of Princess Charlotte, not every gift has been a success.
During an appearance on former England striker Peter Crouch's podcast on BBC Radio Five Live, William humorously recounted an early gift in their relationship: a pair of binoculars. He shared that this particular choice is one Kate "has never let him forget."
"I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once - she's never let me forget that. That was early on in the courtship - I think that sealed the deal. It didn't go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time," William admitted.
In contrast, Kate has proven to be more thoughtful with her gifts. For William's 37th birthday in 2019, she compiled a scrapbook filled with family photos and homemade pictures from their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The Duchess of Cambridge even kept the gift a secret at her sister Pippa's home to surprise William.
A source told The Sun, "Kate and the children have been compiling a large album of the children's paintings, drawings, and collages. They reflect what they have been doing over the past year." The album, themed 'Then There Were Three,' marks Prince Louis's first year in the family and ties into Kate's Back to Nature garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, which included a den, tree house, and swing.
"You could say it's a reminder to William about what is really important. It's been put together with a great deal of care," the insider added.
