Prince Harry and Meghan Markle skipped the annual Balmoral trip with the royal family to enjoy a secret holiday following Prince Archie's birth in 2019.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose not to stay with the Queen at her Scottish Highlands estate, instead opting for a private celebration with their newborn son, Archie. This marked a departure from royal tradition, as Harry and Meghan decided to take Archie on his first holiday to Ibiza.
Reports from Spanish publications revealed that the Sussexes flew to the Balearic island on a private plane, accompanied by their usual security team. Shortly after, the family also traveled to Nice, staying at Elton John's private villa.
Author Tom Bower claimed in his book Revenge that Meghan felt Archie was "too young at three months to travel by plane to Scotland," which was part of the reason for their absence from Balmoral that year.
In recent years, Harry and Meghan have continued to skip the Balmoral break with their children, Archie and Lilibet. Meghan only managed one trip to Balmoral as a working royal in 2018, shortly after her marriage to Harry.
Jennie Bond, a royal commentator, shared insights about this year's summer retreat, stating, "It's been one heck of a year for the royal family so far and nothing would please the King more than to have his close family gathered together in the peace of Balmoral."
She also mentioned Kate Middleton's summer plans, noting that cancer treatment brings uncertainty about whether she will be able to join the family at Balmoral. Bond expressed that if Kate does go, the family will surround her with love and support, ensuring the summer is as enjoyable as possible for the children.
The Scottish Highlands estate was one of the late Queen's favorite palaces, and King Charles seems keen to continue the traditions associated with the annual summer getaway, welcoming family members for stays at various points over the break.
