In his memoir, Spare, Prince Harry recounts the significant tension between him and William leading up to his wedding with Meghan. According to royal expert Robert Jobson's latest book, Catherine, The Princess Of Wales: The Biography, this tension was evident well before the 2018 nuptials.
Jobson claims that William was so uneasy about Harry's impending marriage that he requested assurances from Queen Elizabeth II to prevent Meghan from wearing Diana's jewelry, despite Kate Middleton being allowed to wear Diana's iconic sapphire engagement ring. The request highlighted the strained relationship between the brothers as Harry and Meghan's wedding approached.
The serialization of Jobson's book in The Mail on Sunday details how these family tensions escalated. According to Harry's memoir, an incident involving lip gloss between Meghan and Kate, along with disputes over bridesmaid dresses, added to the pre-wedding stress.
Jobson writes, "By the time William was confirmed as best man, the relationship had worsened. Concerned about the match, he'd sought assurances from the Queen that Harry's bride would not wear any of Princess Diana's jewelry, even though his own wife was allowed to wear it. Despite sharp digs and thin skins on both sides, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a spectacular success. In public, the Royal Family were all smiles, though privately they were at daggers drawn."
Though Meghan did not wear Diana's jewelry during the wedding ceremony, she famously donned Diana's aquamarine cocktail ring at the evening reception, paired with a Stella McCartney halterneck dress. Over the years, Meghan has also been seen wearing other pieces from Diana's collection, including a Cartier bracelet and butterfly earrings.
