In a new ITV documentary titled "Tabloids on Trial," Prince Harry delves into his ongoing struggle against the British tabloid press, a fight he believes is crucial to address their invasive practices. The Duke of Sussex detailed how his mother, Princess Diana, was one of the early victims of phone hacking in the mid-90s, asserting that her concerns were valid and not merely paranoia.
Prince Harry stated, "There’s evidence to suggest she was being hacked in the mid-90s. She was probably one of the first individuals targeted." He criticized the tabloids for continuing to paint his mother as paranoid despite evidence to the contrary.
In December, Harry won a significant portion of his case against the UK's tabloids, with a high court judge awarding him £140,600 in damages after ruling that his phone was hacked from late 2003 to April 2009.
However, not everyone is supportive of Harry's campaign. Charles Rae, a former royal reporter for The Sun, speaking to GB News, dismissed Harry's comments as overly dramatic. Rae said, "I think he's being a bit disingenuous... It's right that he takes action, but let's not run away with the fact that he's some sort of avenging angel, trying to win for the greater good and everything else, which is a load of old rubbish."
Harry also highlighted the personal cost of his fight against the tabloids, mentioning its impact on his relationship with his family. When asked by journalist Becca Barry about the extent to which this battle had affected his family ties, Harry acknowledged it as a central issue, stating, "It is certainly a central piece to it... I have made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done."
Harry emphasized that his efforts are driven by a sense of duty and the need for change, adding, "It would be nice if we did it as a family... I am doing this for my reasons."
