Duke of Sussex’s Memoir Rerelease Reopens Old Wounds for King Charles: ‘Worst Possible Timing’

Rerelease of Spare adds strain on King Charles amid health challenges, sparking concerns over timing

The Duke of Sussex appears to be reigniting tensions with his father, King Charles, by choosing a particularly sensitive moment to rerelease his controversial memoir, Spare.

Nearly two years after its initial release, Harry plans to launch the paperback edition of Spare on October 24th in the UK and October 22nd in the US. Despite reports suggesting no new content, experts believe the timing could still reopen painful memories for his cancer-stricken father.

Royal expert Phil Dampier highlighted the unfortunate timing, pointing out that the rerelease coincides with King Charles’s first Heads of Government meeting in Samoa. “The timing couldn't be worse,” Dampier said, noting that the King and Catherine are both dealing with health challenges, making this an especially difficult period.

Dampier also dismissed the notion that this could be an olive branch from Harry, suggesting instead that it will likely dredge up past family scandals. This move comes just weeks after reports surfaced that King Charles has been ignoring Harry’s repeated attempts to contact him, leaving many to wonder if the rerelease is a bid for his father’s attention.

Royal commentator Ingrid Seward also weighed in, observing that while it’s unusual for a paperback to be released without any updates, it’s not entirely unprecedented. Nonetheless, the timing and circumstances make this particular release particularly fraught with tension.
