King Charles's Bond with Meghan Markle Deepens During Recent Visit

King Delighted by Meghan’s Unexpected Connection to His Favourite Person

A significant moment that deepened the bond between King Charles and Meghan Markle occurred before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in January 2020. In his memoir Spare, published in January 2023, Prince Harry reveals that the connection between Meghan and his father grew stronger when the King discovered a surprising detail about the Duchess.

Harry recounts that Charles was thrilled to learn that Meghan Markle shares a birthday with his "favourite person"—the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth. During a visit to the Castle of Mey in Scotland in the summer of 2018, the King's face reportedly lit up with joy upon this revelation.

"The bond between Meg and Pa, always strong, grew even stronger during that weekend," Harry writes. He describes how, during an evening at the Castle of Mey, Charles’s delight was clear as he learned that Meghan shares the same birthday as his beloved grandmother, whom he affectionately called "Gan-Gan."

This special connection was revealed during pre-dinner cocktails, with Fred Astaire playing softly in the background. Harry recalls in his memoir how Charles’s demeanour transformed upon learning this fact. “Amazing,” he remarked with a smile.

"He suddenly became buoyant, telling stories I’d never heard, essentially showing off for Meg," Harry writes.

The Queen Mother, a cherished figure in the royal family, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2002, at the age of 101, leaving a lasting legacy that clearly continues to resonate with King Charles.
