Meghan Markle Celebrates Birthday with French Fry Tradition

Duchess of Sussex to Discuss Online Safety Initiative on US TV

Meghan Markle has surprised her fans with an unexpected birthday tradition, choosing to celebrate her special day with French fries topped with a candle. The Duchess of Sussex, who turns 43 today (Sunday, 4 August), revealed her unique breakfast choice in a video clip shared on X (formerly Twitter) from a previous birthday celebration. In the clip, Meghan is seen chatting with a chef, much to the chef's amusement, as she explains her preference for savoury over sweet treats.

"For my birthday, since I don’t have a sweet tooth, I always have French fries for breakfast with a little candle," Meghan shared.

The video was accompanied by a heartfelt message: "Happy birthday to this girl boss, mother, wife, daughter, humanitarian, activist, role model, queen of constancy & kindness, Princess Meghan Markle." Fans quickly added their own messages of support, with one writing, "Best wishes Meghan," alongside a heart emoji, while another expressed, "Happy Birthday to Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex. Wishing her all the best and all the happiness. May her grace, kindness, resilience, optimism, and strength continue to inspire us all."

Meghan's fondness for French fries dates back many years. In 2012, she posted an Instagram photo of her "Birthday french fries" with the hashtag "tradition," which received 896 likes. She has also referred to chips as her "vice" in an interview with Delish, along with wine: "French fries and vino are my vices," she admitted. "I'm always hoping I'm having lunch with people, so we can share fries. It's its own food group for me."

The Duchess also expressed her love for poutine, a popular Canadian dish of chips, cheese curds, and gravy, stating, "It's got to squeak when you bite into it."

In addition to her birthday festivities, Meghan is set to appear on US television with her husband, Prince Harry, to discuss their new initiative focused on children's online safety. This announcement follows news of the couple's upcoming royal-style four-day tour of Colombia later this summer.

While specific details of her birthday celebrations remain private, Meghan is expected to enjoy the day with her supportive husband Harry and their children, 5-year-old Archie and 3-year-old Lilibet.
