Duchess of Sussex Addresses Rift with Royal Family in Poignant Interview
In a recent interview aimed at discussing the impact of online bullying, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sent a powerful message to the royal family, highlighting the potential for reconciliation.
During their appearance on CBS, an unexpected moment prompted Meghan to reflect on her past experiences with the royals. A simple comment, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, had the potential to "undoubtedly damage the institution" by reopening old wounds.
On CBS Sunday Morning, journalist Jane Pauley replayed a clip from their explosive 2021 Oprah interview, where Meghan discussed her struggles with suicidal thoughts.
Caught off guard by the question, the Duchess of Sussex responded, "I haven't really scraped the surface of my experience, but I do think I would never want someone else to feel that way, or for someone else to make those sorts of plans, or for someone else to not be believed."
Fitzwilliams, speaking to The Sun, likened the Oprah interview to "placing a nuclear bomb in the courtyard of Buckingham Palace" when it first aired.
He noted that revisiting these clips could inflict "so much harm to the royal family," particularly during a time when King Charles and Kate Middleton are contending with their own personal challenges, such as their cancer battles.
"What Meghan said in the CBS interview about the issues and her mental health, and the fact that she felt suicidal, is a very, very serious charge to lay against the royal family,” Fitzwilliams commented.
He added, "If you want a relationship of any sort and you give interviews of this sort that bring up memories that will undoubtedly damage the institution, clearly you won't get it."
Fitzwilliams concluded that Harry and Meghan don’t seem inclined to "bridge that gap or mend that rift," as they continue to revisit their past experiences, particularly those involving the royal family.
