Sussexes Begin Tour with a Visit to Local School in Bogotá
Meghan Markle made a poignant statement as she and Prince Harry embarked on their much-anticipated tour of Colombia, kicking off their engagements on Thursday.
The former working royals touched down in Bogotá, Colombia's capital, where they began their official visit by spending time at a local charter school.
During the visit, the Duchess of Sussex was seen warmly greeting students and even taking selfies with them. Meghan spoke candidly about the impact of social media on young people, praising the students as "impressive, smart, and savvy." She encouraged them to be "self-reliant and not tech-reliant."
Vice President of Colombia, Francia Márquez, who extended the invitation to the couple, shared that her inspiration for the visit came from watching their Netflix series. "I learned their story through Netflix, and it moved me," Márquez said. "Meghan is a woman who deserves to come to the country and tell her story."
Márquez also mentioned a significant event held last year on July 25, the Day of Afro-descendant Women, where they had hoped to have Meghan share her experiences as an Afro-descendant woman.
