Duchess Draws Attention Away from Royals During Kate Middleton's Absence
Meghan Markle has reportedly left the Palace concerned about her next move, as the royal family grapples with an ongoing health crisis.
The Duchess of Sussex, who recently appeared with Prince Harry in a CBS interview, has stirred speculation about her alleged political ambitions. Regardless of these rumours, she is causing a stir within the royal family, according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams.
“The problem with the Royal Family at the moment is that they are simply not able to do something which attracts attention on the same level – and attention is important if you’re royal,” Fitzwilliams told The Sun.
While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare for a trip to Colombia, the royals plan to retreat to Balmoral in Scotland for a break.
Fitzwilliams suggested that after King Charles and Kate Middleton were diagnosed with cancer, it left a “vacuum” that other royals cannot fill. Despite efforts by Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Sophie Wessex to step up, they are “not particularly high profile,” and the royal institution relies on its senior royals for visibility.
“There’s also no doubt that Harry and Meghan discovered this in what I would describe as their faux royal tour to Nigeria,” Fitzwilliams noted.
The positive publicity garnered by the Sussexes during their Nigeria tour poses a challenge for the royals, who may struggle to match their optics.
“It’s going to take an enormous amount of publicity, and the Royal Family will not be able to match that in any way that I can foresee,” he warned.
