Duke of Sussex's Relationship with King Reportedly Strained Over Security Concerns and Memories of Diana’s Tragic Incident
Prince Harry and King Charles’s relationship is said to be in a "dreadful" state due to ongoing concerns about the Duke’s security in the UK, as highlighted by a royal commentator.
Richard Fitzwilliams, discussing the matter on this week's episode of The Royal Record podcast with Royal Correspondent Cameron Walker and Digital Royal Editor Svar-Nanan-Sen, delved into the possibility of Harry’s return to the UK being hindered by security issues.
Svar noted, "Richard, you mentioned security issues, and we now know that Prince Harry is highly unlikely to attend his uncle, Lord Fellowes' funeral due to these concerns. He's expressed fears of being attacked while in the UK, feeling uncomfortable with the level of security provided."
When asked whether this concern could deter Harry from returning to the UK for anything other than major events, Fitzwilliams responded: "This is a very complex issue. The Sussexes were aware they would lose automatic police protection when they stepped back as senior working royals. Harry, however, believes this decision was wrong and has taken legal action against the Home Office, though he’s unlikely to win."
In June, it was announced that Harry could appeal against a High Court ruling that dismissed his challenge over the downgrade of his personal security when visiting the UK. He initially sued the Home Office in 2020 after his taxpayer-funded protection was reduced following his and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties.
Fitzwilliams added, "Harry believes Britain is dangerous, which some might find contradictory, considering the security situations in countries like Nigeria or Colombia. His concerns have likely been exacerbated by the recent riots here."
According to Fitzwilliams, Harry also believes that the rift between him and King Charles stems from the belief that the King could override RAVEC, the committee responsible for security decisions, and reinstate police protection for the Sussexes.
"Harry is clearly haunted by what happened to his mother, Diana," Fitzwilliams explained. "He’s taking this issue further, appealing to the Court of Appeal for a change in his security status. He hopes that if his security concerns are addressed, it might lead to more frequent visits, possibly even with Meghan, though her unpopularity remains a significant barrier. Time will tell whether King Charles will see his grandchildren more often if these concerns are resolved."
