Duke of Sussex Faces Backlash Over Security Concerns with Planned Visit to Colombia
Prince Harry has surprised many with his unexpected decision to visit Colombia just before his wife Meghan Markle’s birthday. The Duke of Sussex is facing criticism for what some see as a contradictory stance on his security concerns, especially given his past statements about safety in the UK.
The couple, who reside in Montecito, have often voiced concerns about their security in the UK. Yet, they have accepted an invitation from Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez to visit the South American country, which has raised eyebrows due to Colombia's reputation as a crime hotspot.
GB News previously reported that both the UK and US governments have advised their citizens against travelling to Colombia due to risks of terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping.
Senior royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams addressed the upcoming tour, labelling the Sussexes' decision as 'hypocritical' given their previous complaints about security threats in the UK. In a conversation with The Sun, Fitzwilliams remarked, "I think first what people will think when they see this, Harry's been sounding off about how dangerous it is to his family, and he needs automatic police protection."
Fitzwilliams suggested that if Prince Harry hadn't publicly commented about Britain being unsafe for him and his family in an ITV documentary, his decision to tour Colombia might not seem as "weird" to royal fans.
