Prince William 'Will Be Seen Dead' Before Adopting King Charles's Beloved Custom
Prince William is not hesitant to discontinue ancient royal traditions he dislikes, even if they hold sentimental value for his father, King Charles.
During his current visit to Scotland, King Charles was seen wearing the traditional kilt as he unveiled the Flow Country World Heritage Site plaque on Wednesday. Charles has consistently embraced the tartan skirt, whereas Prince William has expressed strong aversion to the tradition, stating he would "be seen dead" before wearing one, even for a royal engagement. As the heir to the throne, William is expected to abandon this custom once he becomes king.
Neither Prince William nor his brother, Prince Harry, have been photographed wearing a kilt, and their aversion to this cultural attire remains largely unexplained.
The tradition of royals donning tartan and kilts dates back more than a century to Queen Victoria's reign.
Richard Kay of the Daily Mail previously noted, "The Windsors observe a unique—if eccentric—set of house rules when it comes to how to dress in Scotland. The men wear kilts, not just on official engagements but during their off-duty moments too."
William opted for a classic suit instead of a kilt for his graduation ceremony, paired with his academic gown.
Kay added, "Even Princess Diana, no lover of things Scottish, used to display a gesture, such as a tam o' shanter, to the delight of the Celtic fringe."
