Prince William's world was thrown into chaos when his wife, Kate Middleton, was diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer. Already dealing with the shock of his father King Charles' cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery, the news about Kate was described as "devastating" by royal author Robert Jobson.
Jobson shared with Us Weekly that the future king was "completely crestfallen" upon hearing about Kate's condition. He suggested that William immediately experienced "a lump in his throat" and "an empty feeling in his stomach" upon receiving the diagnosis. "It wobbled him," Jobson noted. "There’s no doubt about that."
As the senior working royal without a personal health crisis, William had to step up and manage the responsibilities left by his father and wife's absence from public duties. Jobson explained, "[Kate] has been good in making sure that that happens. She’s shown him that she’s there for him as well as him there for her."
Despite the difficult circumstances, Kate remained "very stoic" after learning about her health condition, as did King Charles, who had also recently received his cancer diagnosis. Both Kate and her father-in-law conveyed the same message to William: "We need you now to stand up to the plate."
