Meghan Markle Paves the Way for Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's Uncommon Honour
Meghan Markle appears to have set a new trend in the royal family, breaking from long-standing traditions observed for special occasions. Towards the end of summer, the royal family gathers at Sandringham Palace in Scotland to unwind and enjoy some downtime. Princess Beatrice, King Charles’ niece, her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and their two-year-old daughter Sienna are expected to join the family for the holidays.
Although Edoardo officially attends many royal events and engagements, he followed in the footsteps of the Duchess of Sussex before his wedding in 2020. Traditionally, the royal family's private Sandringham celebrations are reserved for members of The Firm, and partners typically have to wait until marriage to join.
However, Meghan Markle was invited by Prince Harry to attend the festivities in 2017, before their 2018 wedding, setting a new precedent. Similarly, Edoardo received the rare privilege of joining the Christmas celebrations at Sandringham in 2019, despite traditional restrictions.
Before Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan, this rule was strictly upheld during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth. For instance, Kate Middleton, who was Prince William's longtime girlfriend, did not attend the festivities until she officially became part of the family.
