Buckingham Palace Celebrates Duchess Sophie’s Key Role in Global Health

New Photos Highlight Duchess of Edinburgh’s Impactful Work in Tanzania

Buckingham Palace has released new photos and a statement highlighting Duchess Sophie’s significant contributions during her visit to Tanzania this week as Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

The Duchess of Edinburgh, on her first royal visit to Tanzania since 2018, was welcomed by the British High Commissioner as she works to strengthen partnerships in health, agriculture, and women’s issues. The royal family’s social media accounts paid tribute to Sophie’s dedication, sharing her engagement at a trachoma outreach camp in Mlandizi Health Centre.

“The Duchess of Edinburgh is in Tanzania this week, in her capacity as Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness,” the statement read. “Her Royal Highness observed trachoma screenings and surgeries and learned about the progress being made to eliminate this blinding disease.”

Sophie has set a goal to eradicate trachoma across the Commonwealth by 2030, and earlier in the week, she delivered a message from King Charles commending the efforts to combat the painful condition, which can lead to permanent blindness if left untreated.

Her visit underscores the royal family’s commitment to supporting global health initiatives and advocating for those affected by preventable diseases.
