Former Queen Margrethe of Denmark Cancels Engagements After Injury

84-Year-Old Monarch Recovering from Neck and Hand Injuries Following Fall

Queen Margrethe II, who abdicated the Danish throne earlier this year, has cancelled all upcoming engagements after suffering a neck injury and fracturing her hand in a recent fall.

The Royal House of Denmark confirmed the news in a statement, revealing that the former Queen was discharged from the Royal Hospital and is now recovering at Fredensborg Castle. “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was hospitalised on Wednesday evening after a fall, which unfortunately caused damage around the neck vertebrae as well as a fracture of the left hand,” said Lene Balleby, Head of Communications.

The statement detailed that the Queen’s left hand is now in a cast and she will be required to wear a stiff neck collar for the coming months. Despite the injuries, Queen Margrethe is reportedly in good spirits but will be on sick leave for an extended period, necessitating the cancellation of several planned events.

Fans and supporters quickly flooded social media with well wishes after the Royal Family shared an update on her condition. The 84-year-old has faced several health challenges in recent years, including undergoing extensive back surgery in February 2023, which led to her decision to step down from the throne.

Reflecting on her surgery and abdication in her New Year’s address, Queen Margrethe said, “[The surgery] went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me. It also made me consider the future and whether it was time to pass the responsibility to the next generation.”

While she recovers, the former Queen remains a significant presence, continuing to attend meetings and engagements as her health permits.
