Inside Prince William and Kate Middleton’s £5 Million Windsor Sanctuary

Adelaide Cottage Provides a Serene Retreat for the Wales Family Amid Expansive Windsor Estate

Adelaide Cottage, the charming Grade-II listed residence in Windsor, has become a cherished sanctuary for Prince William and Princess Kate since their move in the summer of 2022. This cozy home offers an intimate setting, a stark contrast to the grandeur of their former residence, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, which spans 20 rooms over four stories.

With just four bedrooms, the cottage is perfectly sized for the couple and their three children—Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. However, it doesn’t accommodate live-in quarters for their trusted nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. Despite its smaller size compared to their 10-bedroom Anmer Hall residence in Norfolk, Adelaide Cottage compensates with vast green spaces, ideal for the nature-loving family to enjoy.

The cottage, designed by architect Jeffry Wyatville in 1831, has a rich history, having once been home to Peter Townsend, the former lover of Princess Margaret. Its 19th-century decor, including golden dolphins and rope motifs in the primary bedroom, along with a striking marble fireplace in the living room, adds to its unique charm.

One of the key reasons behind the couple’s decision to move to Adelaide Cottage is its proximity to Windsor Castle and the Princess of Wales' family. Nestled within a sprawling 655-acre estate, the residence provides both privacy and accessibility, making it the perfect retreat for balancing royal duties and family life.
