James Middleton Reveals Prince William’s Uncomfortable Moments with Middleton Family

Prince of Wales Prefers Dog Walks Over Intense Family Card Games

James Middleton has shared surprising insights about his brother-in-law Prince William’s aversion to the competitive card games played within the Middleton family, in his new memoir Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life.

According to an excerpt published by the Daily Mail, James revealed that William often avoided the family's spirited card game sessions, preferring to spend time with James’ dog, Ella. “William would flinch at our ruthless determination to win at all costs,” James recalled, noting that the Prince of Wales was usually “delighted to be the first out.”

The memoir details how William would use Ella as an excuse to escape the intense card games. “‘James, does Ella need a walk?’ he’d ask before we’d even started dealing the cards,” James shared, adding that the siblings would exchange knowing glances as William made his quiet exit.

James described how William became fond of Ella from their first encounter, often choosing to cuddle with the dog over participating in the competitive atmosphere. “For all the rigour of his military training, William was happy to be a loser at cards,” James noted.

This glimpse into the Prince’s interactions with the Middleton family reveals a more relaxed side of the future King, as he navigates the dynamics of his in-laws’ lively gatherings.
