Duchess of Sussex Declined Support from Sophie, Citing Confidence in Harry
When Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family, she received well-meaning advice from the late Queen Elizabeth II on adjusting to her new royal role. According to Robert Jobson’s book Our King: Charles III The Man and the Monarch Revealed, the Queen expressed her joy over Harry finding love and suggested Meghan seek guidance from Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, known for her grace and expertise in managing royal duties.
The Queen’s recommendation, however, was met with a brief and surprising response from Meghan: "I’ve got Harry." The comment left the Queen taken aback, as she had hoped Sophie, often referred to as the Royal Family’s “secret weapon,” could offer valuable support.
Gyles Brandreth's book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait also highlights the Queen’s awareness of the challenges Meghan might face and her intention to provide assistance through Sophie’s mentorship. Despite their shared experiences of joining the royal family from non-aristocratic backgrounds, Meghan confidently asserted that she didn’t need additional support beyond her husband, Prince Harry.
Sophie, who transitioned from a successful career in public relations to royal life, remains a key figure in the Royal Family, known for her steady and reliable presence in fulfilling her duties.
