Prince Andrew Resists Moving from Royal Lodge Amid Status Concerns

Duke of York’s Standoff with King Charles Over Security and Residence Continues

Prince Andrew’s reluctance to leave Royal Lodge, his long-time residence, is reportedly fuelled by concerns over his status, as the ongoing dispute between the Duke of York and King Charles shows no signs of resolution.

The Duke, who has lived in the property with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson since 2003, is “refusing to leave,” according to royal expert Michael Cole, who spoke to GB News. Despite holding a 75-year lease on the estate, Andrew is facing pressure from King Charles to relocate to Frogmore Cottage, previously occupied by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Cole revealed that Andrew is particularly concerned about losing the security arrangements currently funded by King Charles, which are set to expire in the coming months. “Andrew feels entitled to the security protection, and he believes he deserves it,” Cole explained, adding that the termination of this contract signals the King’s desire for his brother to move to a smaller residence.

Maintaining the Royal Lodge is a significant financial burden, with Cole noting that Andrew is responsible for the upkeep of the historic property. “It’s very expensive to maintain an old, sprawling house like that,” he said.

King Charles’s push to relocate Andrew to Frogmore Cottage, situated within the security perimeter of Windsor Castle, would simplify the provision of security. Cole highlighted that this move is a clear indication of the monarch’s intent. “By withdrawing his payment for the security contract, the King is signalling to Prince Andrew that he wants him to move,” he added.

When questioned about the Duke’s reluctance to vacate Royal Lodge, Cole suggested that it’s a “question of status” for Andrew. “He sees it as befitting his position as the late Queen’s second son to live there,” Cole stated, emphasising Andrew’s determination to remain at the property.

However, the financial realities may soon impact Andrew’s stance. With the King withdrawing support for his security detail, the Duke will need to bear the costs himself, raising questions about his ability to maintain his current lifestyle.

“The real issue will be whether he can afford to stay there if he has to fund his own security 24 hours a day. That’s an enormous expense, and it’s uncertain if he has the means to cover it,” Cole concluded, suggesting that financial pressures could ultimately force the Duke’s hand.
