Latest developments on Duke of Sussex’s status amid speculation of royal return.
A royal expert has shared a cryptic update regarding Prince Harry’s much-debated role within the royal family, fueling speculation about his potential reconciliation with the monarchy.
Royal author Angela Levin took to X (formerly Twitter) to address Prince Harry's standing as a Counsellor of State. Levin's post highlighted the current Counsellors, noting that only active working members of the royal family are typically called upon to fulfil these duties.
She wrote: “The bill has been passed. The current Counsellors of State include The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of Sussex, The Duke of York, and Princess Beatrice… Only working Members of the Royal Family are called upon as Counsellors of State.”
Counsellors of State are tasked with carrying out key responsibilities on behalf of the Sovereign, such as attending Privy Council meetings, signing official documents, and receiving new ambassadors to the UK. By law, these roles are filled by the Sovereign’s spouse and the next four adults in the line of succession.
The 2022 amendment to the Regency Acts 1937-1953 allowed The Princess Royal and The Duke of Edinburgh to serve as Counsellors of State, adding them to the list alongside Prince Harry. While Harry retains the title, only active royals are called upon to perform the duties, adding further intrigue to his current position and potential future within the royal fold.
