Prince William Faces Scrutiny Over Financial Controversy at Duchy of Cornwall

Allegations of Mismanaged Funds and Lack of Transparency Stir Criticism

Prince William has come under intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced regarding the Duchy of Cornwall, the estate he inherited following King Charles’s ascension. The estate is accused of withholding a substantial sum (£37,700) from a local business owner, raising concerns over its operations and financial practices.

The controversy arose after a business owner, identified as CW, dissolved their company due to health issues in November 2023. According to reports, when the company’s bank accounts were closed, funds were mistakenly transferred to the Duchy instead of the rightful owner. Despite prolonged efforts, the owner faced significant delays before finally reclaiming the money.

This incident has sparked debate over the Duchy’s ambiguous role, operating both as a private estate and at times exerting state-like authority. Graham Smith, chief executive of the campaign group Republic, condemned the practice on social media, stating, “If your company is dissolved in Cornwall, William might take your money. Absolute disgrace.”

Further criticism has been directed at William for not releasing detailed tax information related to the estate, a practice his father, King Charles, maintained when he managed the Duchy. Kensington Palace stated that William is paying “appropriate” taxes on his income, exceeding the amount paid by Charles due to his higher earnings, but this lack of transparency has raised eyebrows.

The controversy comes as reports suggest that William and Catherine are “quietly preparing” for their future roles as king and queen, as King Charles continues to receive treatment for cancer. The growing scrutiny on William’s management of the Duchy could complicate this transition as he navigates these challenges.
