Prince William Reflects on Late Queen's Lifelong Support During Difficult Moments

The Duke of Cambridge recalls Queen Elizabeth's guidance during his parents' divorce and her lasting impact on his life.

Even before Queen Elizabeth's passing, her grandchildren always spoke highly of her, with Prince William being no exception.

Throughout the years, the future King has consistently paid tribute to his grandmother, both for her role as a cherished family member and her dedication as a monarch.

A royal expert has recently revealed how profoundly Queen Elizabeth supported William during his formative years, shaping the man he is today.

Journalist and author Robert Lacey, writing for People magazine, explains how the Queen extended a significant gesture during a particularly challenging period of William's youth. As the public separation and eventual divorce of his parents, Charles and Diana, unfolded, the Queen established a comforting tradition: inviting William to Windsor Castle for regular Sunday lunches. Lacey notes that her actions in 1995, as the marriage fell apart, provided much-needed emotional support.

"The 13-year-old was in a vulnerable place — adjusting to boarding life at Eton College, just across the river from Windsor," Lacey writes. Concerned for William's well-being, the Queen began inviting him to spend weekends with her.

The idea, however, was not entirely the Queen's. According to Lacey, her husband, Prince Philip, initially suggested the arrangement, playing a key role in preparing William for his future as King. "Philip would quietly excuse himself when discussions turned to constitutional matters, as he preferred not to interfere in the Queen's responsibilities," Lacey explains.

Following the Queen's passing in September 2022, William paid tribute to her leadership and her role as a grandmother, sharing his gratitude for her guidance throughout his life. "She was with me during my happiest moments, and by my side during my saddest days," he said.
