Concerns about the couple’s rapid relationship led to tensions within the royal family.
Before Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018, Prince William reportedly sought assurances from the Queen, according to a royal author. With the couple having been together for less than two years, concerns about the speed of their relationship caused William to request a key guarantee from his grandmother.
In his memoir Spare, Harry described the significant tension between him and William during the lead-up to the wedding. Royal biographer Robert Jobson, in Catherine, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, claims that William’s anxiety grew to the point where he asked the Queen to ensure Meghan would not wear any of Princess Diana’s jewellery during the ceremony, though Catherine had access to it.
Despite these tensions, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a public success, although behind the scenes, the family’s relationships remained strained. While Meghan didn’t wear Diana’s jewellery during the wedding, she notably wore the late Princess’s aquamarine cocktail ring at her evening reception.
Less than two years after their nuptials, Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties, moving to America and leaving their relationship with William and Catherine deeply fractured.
