Princess Anne Shares Down-to-Earth Career Aspiration After Earning HGV Licence

Royal Reflects on Independent Life as a Lorry Driver Away from the Royal Spotlight

Princess Anne, in a 1983 interview with Michael Parkinson alongside her then-husband Mark Phillips, revealed an unexpected career ambition, offering a rare glimpse into her life beyond royal duties.

When asked what she would do if she were a commoner for a day, Anne expressed her desire to drive a lorry, a wish that still resonates with her today. Reflecting on her earlier remarks, she explained, "I was considering earning my living by driving, and with my HGV licence, I don’t mind spending time on my own behind the wheel."

She emphasised the appeal of the lifestyle, noting, "You could run your own life that way, work long hours for a time, and then enjoy some well-earned free time. It wouldn’t be such a bad way of doing things."

In a newly resurfaced 1981 documentary, Princess Anne: Her Working Life, she also discussed the expectations placed on Royal Family members during public duties. Anne noted the importance of maintaining a positive demeanor, saying, "You must be nice, bright, and cheerful, even when you may not necessarily feel like it."

Usually accompanied by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, Anne also remarked that having a supportive companion is essential during official engagements.
