Royal Family's Sweet and Quirky Nicknames Revealed

From "Lottie" to "Lou Bug," William and Catherine's children enjoy playful names behind palace doors

The royal family may be known for their formal titles, but behind the scenes, they share a more relaxed and playful side with endearing nicknames. William and Catherine's three children, known to the world by their official titles, have a few fun monikers within the family.

Catherine affectionately calls their only daughter "Poppet," a nickname that surfaced in 2018. Charlotte, born on May 2, 2015, also goes by "Lottie" within her inner circle. Her school friends even refer to her as "Lottie Wales," acknowledging the titles her parents received after the Queen’s passing. William and Catherine also call her the "Warrior Princess" due to her lively nature, and William sometimes uses the French term "mignonette" as a sign of affection.

Their eldest child, George, picked up the nickname "PG," which eventually evolved into "Tips," after the British tea brand PG Tips. Catherine’s nickname for their youngest, Louis, is equally sweet—he’s lovingly called "Lou Bug."

Even Prince William carries nicknames, with "Wombat," a name his late mother Diana gave him, standing out. A childhood slip of the tongue from William also gave Queen Elizabeth her unusual family nickname, "Gary," when he struggled to say "Granny" as a young boy.

Nicknames in the royal family highlight the warmth and closeness behind the formality of their public roles.
