Buckingham Palace Releases Nostalgic Video as King Charles Begins Historic Australia Tour

Monarch reflects on Queen Elizabeth’s 1954 visit ahead of his first tour as Sovereign.

As King Charles jetted off from Heathrow Airport for his highly anticipated tour of Australia, Buckingham Palace shared a heartfelt video commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to the country 70 years ago. The royal family’s social media account posted the nostalgic footage, honouring the late Queen’s groundbreaking 1954 tour, which made her the first reigning British Sovereign to visit Australia.

The accompanying statement reads: “70 years ago, in 1954, Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning British Sovereign to visit Australia. Tomorrow, The King will arrive for his own first visit as Sovereign, accompanied by Queen Camilla.” During this tour, King Charles will follow in his mother’s footsteps, addressing Parliament in Canberra, just as Queen Elizabeth did seven decades ago.

The footage, sourced from the British Film Institute, adds a historical context to King Charles’ journey, which he undertook solo before reuniting with Queen Camilla in Singapore. The royal couple is set to receive an official welcome in Sydney on Friday night, marking an important milestone in King Charles’ reign.
