Duchess Sophie Shares Heartbreaking Message After Emotional Encounter in Chad

Duchess of Edinburgh Moved to Tears by Harrowing Stories of Refugee Women

Duchess Sophie shared an emotional message after meeting victims of sexual abuse during her recent visit to Chad, where refugees fleeing the war in Sudan are seeking safety. The Duchess of Edinburgh was moved to tears after hearing horrific accounts of sexual violence endured by the women she met.

In an interview with The Sun, Sophie said, "I daren't even describe to you what they've been doing to children. It's not just about the sexual violence, which is horrific because they're having to exchange food and water for sex, and if they don't, they kill them."

She spoke of the heartbreaking reality these women face, noting that many have no choice but to flee, often considering themselves fortunate if they survive. Sophie also recalled meeting a silent young girl near the Sudanese border, expressing her deep concern for the trauma the child had likely endured.

As King Charles’s sister-in-law, the Duchess voiced serious concerns over the escalating abuse of women and children in conflict zones, emphasising the urgent need for action.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement on October 14, recognising Sophie as the first member of the Royal Family to visit Chad. The Palace also honoured her ongoing commitment to championing women's rights and standing up for vulnerable populations.
