Duchess Sophie’s heartfelt visit to Chad touches lives

Duchess of Edinburgh meets Sudanese refugees and highlights humanitarian crisis

Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh captivated hearts during her recent visit to Chad, where she met with Sudanese refugees and delivered a powerful speech at the British Embassy in N'Djamena. Over the course of her three-day trip, the Duchess worked closely with charity workers and NGOs, bringing attention to the severe humanitarian challenges in the region.

Sophie, who wore a striking red wrap dress with crescent moon and star prints, accessorized her look with heeled wedges from Penelope Chilvers and elegant jewellery, but it was her empathy and grace that truly stood out.

Accompanied by UNICEF representatives, the Duchess was visibly moved by the stories of refugees fleeing the ongoing civil war in Sudan. During a visit to a hospital in Adre, she listened to harrowing accounts from women who had experienced conflict-related sexual violence, leaving her emotional as she addressed the press.

"What they are enduring is unimaginable," Sophie said. She expressed her deep concern over the atrocities, adding, "People are being forced to exchange food and water for sex, for rape. It is appalling to see violence used as a bargaining tool in conflict."

Her visit not only shed light on the plight of Sudanese refugees but also underscored the urgent need for international support to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
