Harry and Meghan Make Strategic Move with European Home Purchase

Duke and Duchess of Sussex acquire property in Portugal, reportedly resolving travel and visa concerns

Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly made a significant real estate purchase in Europe. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who were removed from Frogmore Cottage by King Charles in 2023, have now acquired a property in Portugal, according to MailOnline.

The decision appears to be linked to their ongoing visa situation. The couple’s eviction was publicised in 2022, shortly after the release of Harry’s memoir Spare, which caused tension within the royal family.

While Harry has returned to the UK for various engagements, Meghan and their children have not visited since September 2022, following Queen Elizabeth’s passing. During his UK visits, Harry has stayed in hotels due to strained relationships with his family, though he did once stay at Althorp, his late mother Princess Diana’s childhood home.

The newly purchased home in Portugal could offer visa-free access to the EU's Schengen area under a “Golden Visa” programme, making their travels easier, the report suggests.

This development comes shortly after Harry’s 40th birthday, which also brought a substantial inheritance from his late great-grandmother. The Queen Mother left a trust fund for her great-grandchildren, providing Harry with a substantial sum, possibly influencing the couple’s decision to invest in the property.
