Princess of Wales prioritises family as senior royals gather at Balmoral
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, made the personal decision to stay behind in Windsor during Queen Elizabeth II’s last moments, despite her close relationship with the late monarch. While Prince William rushed to Balmoral with other family members, Kate chose to remain with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as they had just started at their new school, Lambrook.
William travelled to Scotland alongside his uncles, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, as well as Duchess Sophie. Kate’s absence sparked speculation, with some wondering if King Charles had influenced her decision. However, royal author Robert Hardman clarified in his book Charles III: New King, New Court that it was Kate who ultimately chose to stay home to provide support for their children.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle was also not present at Balmoral, a decision made by King Charles, who stated that "no other wives were coming," including Kate. This led to tension, as Harry later recalled in his memoir Spare.
The Queen passed away peacefully at 15:10 on September 8, with only King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Princess Anne by her side. Harry, who was en route to Balmoral at the time, received the news after landing, just before the official announcement was made.
