Duchess of Sussex recalls formal first meeting with Kate, while family encounters show another side
The differing experiences of Meghan Markle and Princess Kate’s first meetings offer an intriguing contrast. In her Netflix series, Meghan recalled feeling surprised by the formality of the royal family, particularly in her initial encounter with Kate. Meghan, dressed casually in ripped jeans and barefoot, described herself as a "hugger," noting that her warm approach seemed to jar with Kate’s more formal style.
However, a new anecdote from James Middleton’s memoir offers a different perspective on Kate’s personality. James shared the story of how his now-wife, Alizee Thevenet, met Kate and Prince William in a casual and unexpected encounter at the Middleton family home. Despite Alizee's informal appearance—wearing one of James’s shirts—Kate responded warmly, with no awkwardness, and quickly welcomed her into the family.
This account stands in contrast to Meghan’s portrayal of Kate as somewhat distant during their first meeting in 2017, where Meghan felt surprised by the formality that extended beyond public appearances. Meghan described how her own casual style and friendly manner clashed with the royal family’s more reserved approach, leaving her feeling disconnected from their traditional way of interacting.
James’s story, however, reveals a more relaxed and approachable side of Kate, particularly in family settings, challenging Meghan’s depiction and suggesting that the Princess of Wales can be warm and easygoing when the situation allows.
